I interviewed Derek Lersch to get the behind the scenes look at his new song out 6.26.2020 title “Ol’ Beach Town”. Every song comes from a different place and I enjoy reading about how they came about from the artists.

Who are the writers?
I’m actually the sole writer on this song.
Who are the performers?
My producer Joe Merrick, guitarist Billy Hillman, and myself performed on the track.
Where did the idea come from?
I was having a conversation with someone and they said “just an Old Beach town” and the songwriting light bulb immediately went off. I was born in Scituate, MA which is totally an Ol Beach Town and also grew up in Sarasota, FL which is just 15 minutes from the beach, so I’ve been surrounded by the beach my whole life. Funny part is if I’m being truthful, I hate actually going to the beach! Sand is just not my thing!

What came first, the music, the words, the idea?
The idea and song title definitely came first. That’s usually how I start writing is with the song title or just the idea and I build the song from there.

Is it going to be a part of a larger collection, such as EP or album?
It’s going to be a part of my EP. The EP has definitely taken a lot longer than I’ve wanted but I’m just going to focus on getting new music to everyone.
Lyrically, what perspective is the song told from?
Lyrically the perspective of the song is told from a guy reminiscing on a spring break love that he met and had to say goodbye too. It talks about the journey of them going on spring break, meeting each other, the memories they created, and how he’d do anything to get it back.

Were there any challenges while writing it?
This song actually came pretty easy. I had the arrangement, first verse, and chorus in about 20 minutes. I think I then polished it up over the next few days, but looking back this song felt right and kind of just flowed out pretty easy.

What sets this song apart from your previous work? What sets this song apart from what is being playing on the radio today?
I’ve personally felt this song has been my best so far as far as overall composition and showing growth in my songwriting ability. I think it’s got the radio hook and has a different sound. 99.1 WQIK played it in Jacksonville and it was amazing! Hoping to get it on more stations.
