MEET…Derek Lersch

What’s your favorite kind of sandwich?
My favorite sandwich is definitely a turkey and cheese with bacon!

The Beatles or Elvis? Why?
For me, it’s definitely The Beatles. The talent that each four of them had was just incredible and the songwriting was out of this world. As a musician and songwriter, The Beatles are such an inspiration to try new things and tell amazing stories while doing it.

Lyrics to live by?
“Dream On, Dream On, Dream On, Dream Until Your Dreams Come True.”

“Desert Island” album?
“The Very Best of The Eagles”

What country music artists do you listen to the most?
Luke Combs and Jason Aldean.

How do you see country music evolving within 10 years?
I see the genre continuing to evolve and push the traditional boundaries with new artists trying new things. I do think there will also be a new twist on “traditional” Country that will have a big impact with artists like Dillion Carmichael. Country music will always be the genre that tells the best stories and it’s great to hear it in different ways.

Where do you see your musical career in 5 years?
In 5 years, I see myself playing much bigger shows and continuing to release music. I hope to have a record deal and to continue following my dream.

Are there any instruments you don’t play but wish you did? Why?
I really wish I could play drums. It is such a great skill and I already play guitar and piano, so drums is definitely on the wish list to learn to play.

What was the best advice you have received?
Never give up. There will be people who knock you down and laugh at you for chasing your dreams, but the most successful people in life are the ones who never give up.

What advice would you give to yourself at the start of your musical career?
Just keep writing songs and always practice. It’s a long journey to be successful and it takes a lot of hard work and dedication.

Where does most of your inspiration come from?
Most of my inspiration just comes from life and it’s experiences. Songwriting is such a great way to tell your life stories, whether it be love, heartbreak, or just a good time partying.

What do you consider to be your biggest achievement in your career so far?
In 2015, I tried out for the final season (on FOX) of American Idol and advanced a few rounds at the Savannah, GA auditions. It was a very cool experience and it was an honor to advance as far as I did. Personally, I feel that release my debut single “Miss Me Whiskey” was my biggest achievement and greatest thing I’ve done. To see my song on iTunes and to have people all over get to hear a song I wrote, recorded, and released, was a dream come true. And I really feel this is just the beginning.

What’s on the horizon for you that you would like to share?
I just released my debut single “Miss Me Whiskey” on November 30th and I plan to follow it up with another single “Forever and Always” sometime in early next year. After those singles, I will release an EP of 4-5 songs in the summer of 2019.
