Getting to Know… Q and A with Jessica Meuse
What’s your favorite kind of sandwich?
I actually don’t eat a lot of sandwiches…but when I do, they’re turkey sandwiches.
The Beatles or Elvis? Why?
Oh man. Hard choice. I don’t think I can choose between those two. Both were such iconic musicians of their time and live on into today’s musical world.
Lyrics to live by?
“All that you need now is in your soul.” – ‘Simple Man’ by Lynyrd Skynyrd
“Desert Island” album?
Hmmmm I’m thinking some Led Zeppelin.
What country music artists do you listen to the most?
I really enjoy 90s country. I listen to artists like Faith Hill, Sara Evans, George Strait, and old school Tim McGraw.
I see you as “rock meets country”. What rock artists do you listen to the most?
A LOT of old school rock n roll! Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Jefferson Airplane…I would have totally gone to Woodstock had I been alive in that era of amazing music.
Of course I have to ask you about Stevie Nicks. How has she inspired you?
Stevie Nicks is an icon. She symbolizes an entire era of amazing music, and there’s no one else in the world that can fully replicate her sound. I love the lyrical content of a lot of her songs. “Rhiannon,” about the which for instance…amazing. I wish I had thought of that!
How do you see country music evolving within 10 years?
I see the roots of country making their way back, slowly but surely. That classic country vibe, almost an alternative twist, is bound to make a comeback. I feel like, at least for the sake of diversity, the drum machines and samples might become another embellishment rather than a necessity, and that the raw feel of country and soul will come back.
Where do you see your musical career in 5 years?
Hopefully making a living doing what I love! I’ve always said, “I will either be a broke musician or a successful one!”
Are there any instruments you don’t play but wish you did? Why?
Steel guitar…and a harp. Both instruments are absolutely gorgeous…and ridiculously difficult!
What was the best advice you have received?
It might sound cliche, but it’s the best advice in the world: Always stay true to yourself. There’s a reason people say it so often – because it’s actually one of the hardest things to do in such a mainstream industry.
Where does most of your inspiration come from?
Real life experiences. I draw from things I have personally been through the majority of the time. Music is my form of therapy. Without songwriting and playing, I would probably be a nutcase.
What did you learn from your American Idol experience?
Oh boy. I learned so much! The entire thing was a learning experience. The biggest thing I learned was probably RELATIONSHIPS and how critical they are. Build them, nurture them…you never know who you are meeting and speaking with. That camera guy might be the same guy who videos the Grammys. So many people have all these amazing accomplishments and don’t say much about them. When you build those relationships, you learn from their stories and experiences, and oftentimes they can give you advice to help you move forward in your career.
What is the biggest difference from performing on TV versus a regular stage?
The biggest difference is the perception you get when you watch a television versus physically being in the concert area. It is a completely different animal. The stage, for one, is actually smaller than it appears; the entire room is smaller. You have to pay special attention to where cameras are and when they are active on LIVE television. There’s an entire audience on the other side of the lens that you have to pay attention to and convince them to feel your music in their soul through a television screen.
What is your favorite part of touring and traveling?
Doing what I love and meeting my fans! Easy question! 🙂
What’s on the horizon for you that you would like to share?
I am currently seeking management, booking, and building my team. Also, I’m looking around for studios and individuals I want to record my EP with.
