About 2 years after releasing the massive hit “Pontoon”, Little Big Town gets us “Day Drinking” on June 3rd. This is the first single off their as of yet titled 6th studio album. With the start of summer, the timing could not have been more perfect. “Day Drinking” has the potential of becoming the song of the summer, like “Pontoon” was in 2012.
I’m openly bias about “Pontoon” because that really was THE song that got me hooked on country radio 2 years ago. As usual with me, it was the harmonies and catchy lyrics that pulled me in. So comparing any song to that one is tough, and I’ll admit upon first listen “Day Drinking” didn’t do it for me. However, I was quick to catch myself and thought that it would probably grow on me, and it did. I love it, and I’ve probably listened to it on repeat about 500 times already and it hasn’t even been out for a week.
Little Big Town set some very high expectations with the release of Tornado in September 2012. I think that’s why the first listen was a little hard for me. The whistling is catchy and different from anything else on the radio right now. That could be the hook that pulls other people in when hearing the constant stream of today’s country radio talkin’ ’bout girls, girls girls.
The lyrics are straight forward, no hidden meaning here. The narrator doesn’t want to wait, they want to do “a little day drinkin”. My favorite line is “blame on the tick tock movin’ too slow, blame on any old thing you want to.” And there’s a rockin’ guitar solo that amplifies the guitar work on the song which I love.
Little Big Town debuted the song on the 2014 CMT Music Awards and hinted on Twitter with a photo of white rain coats. When the performance started you saw nothing but white, white clothes, instruments, drums, everything. Then two-thirds into the song a ton of paint was sprayed on the stage, particularly in the direction of Kimberly and Karen. After the paint settled, you saw the girls dripping with multiple streams of paint! The song came out with a BOOM! Its summer, ready set go!
This design is steller! You certainly know how to keep a reader amused.
Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Fantastic job.
I really enjoyed what you had to say, and more than that, how
you presented it. Too cool!
